Melwood injury update:
Liverpool will check on the fitness of James Milner for their Premier League competition with Crystal Palace as he recovering from illness, Jürgen Klopp confirmed on Friday.
The boss is likely to shuffle his pack once more for the encounter with the Eagles, but insists his decisions have not been made all the more difficult by the excellent performance of the Reds in midweek.
“I expected they would play good, so it was not that I was surprised by the performance or something,” he stated. “[Team selection] is not more difficult than before the game. It was only that they played how I expected they would, so there are the same decisions to make like before the Tottenham game.”
Meanwhile, Klopp confirmed Liverpool are looking at where Joe Gomez can get some minutes under his belt as he looks to take the next step on his long road to recovery, though stressed they will very much err on the side of caution with the 19-year-old’s continuing rehabilitation.
After more than a year out of action, the defender returned to training recently, but the Reds are in no rush to get him back into their first-team plans.
Klopp said: “He is good. We always talk about all the players, but with the medical department and the fitness coaches we are talking about Joe. He looks really good at the moment, but it is a long way – he was injured for a long time and now it is a long way back, so there is no rush in it.
“Thank God we don’t have to put pressure on him, like we need tomorrow or something. He is still a young boy so we can give him time to come back in the right moment.
“In the next few weeks, maybe in the international break when we can get a game or something, he will play a few minutes and then we will have a look what makes sense, U23s or whatever.
“He looks good, he feels good. He is tired a lot, especially after the sessions, but that’s normal he is all in a good way.”
